Stainless Steel fabricator looks to improve finishing speeds and appearance. 

 

Kason Corporation manufactures stainless steel equipment for the food and pharmaceutical industries.  They asked us at Lehigh to assist in improving polishing speeds and quality.  After visiting the customer and analyzing the operation we were able to recommend two suggestions which resulted in improvements to the polishing operation.   

 

1. The customer was experiencing drag lines on finished polished material.  We determined the compressor was being overloaded and not enough air was flowing to the tools resulting in the sub par finish.  Because a larger compressor was not in the budget for the short term, we switched to Metabo electric burnishers and Dynabrade electric Dynafiles to improve finish quality and speeds.

2. Another problem addressed was the ability to create a quick uniform finish on fillet welds.

By moving away from the use of coated abrasive belts and discs and using unitized wheels we were able to improve fillet weld finish quality and speed due to the elimination of adjacent scratching from coated abrasive belts and discs.

Boosting Grinding Productivity with see through Avos Technology.

Norton Avos (allows view of surface) resin fiber discs and surface conditioning discs
allow the operator full view of the surface while grinding (see below).

The AVOS design includes the following benefits.

1. See through technology allows the surface to be visible during grinding.

2. By allowing a full view of the surface, finishing times are typically reduced by 25% along with abrasive consumption (less over processing of work piece).

3. Hole placement in discs allows for 25% better air flow and less power draw on tool.

4. Speed Lok attachment allows discs to be mounted without tools.
 


 
Cotton / Felt flap discs excels when applying compounds for high end metal finishing.
Wendt Abrasives has introduced a series of innovative cotton flap discs and flap wheels for applications requiring compound application.  Typically these applications involve creating a highly polished reflective surface on stainless steel, aluminum, brass and other metals.
 
The Wendt Polishing Flap disc consist of 70% wool felt affixed to a fiberglass backing plate to create a thick polishing pad.

- The individual flaps are flexible, and allow a cool air flow.

- Felt discs are used with polishing pastes to provide up to a mirror finish.

- Ideal for work on irregular or contoured surfaces.
